Upon receiving your humidor, it is important to re-humidify the wood to ensure that your collection of cigarrs are not ruined. The reason for this is, the wood in the humidor has not had a chance to reach its equilibrium. So when you place your cigars in the humidor, the wood will absorb their moisture and you will be left with dry cigars. To avoid this problem, all humidors should be re-humified before their first use.
How to humidify your humidor?
1. Fill a shallow container will distilled water. (NOTE: Do not use tap water, they contain chemicals that tend to clog the humidifier element).
2. Carefully place the container inside the humidor.
3. Place a calibrated hygrometer inside the humidor.
4. Charge your humidifier.
a. Remove your humidifier from the humidor (this is a sponge like plastic device that comes with your humidor).
b. Dampen humidifier in 50/50 solution of distilled water and propylene glycol--referred to as activator solution.
Make sure you do not soak the humidifier, just get it damp, usually a few splashes of activator solution is
good enough to charge for few months.
c. Place your humidification device inside your humidor.
5. Securely close the lid and allow for 12 hours to pass.
6. Following the 12 hours, if substantial amount of water has evaporated, re-fill the container a second time and leave it inside the humidor for another 24 hours. (Note: It may take more than 24 hours to fully humdify the humidor. Be patient, and allow time. Many times it takes a week to reach the right humidity).
7.When water stops evaporating (usually when humidity approaches 68% to 72%), it is ready to store your cigars.
We encourage you to check the humidity every day. Especially when you are setting up your humidor. After your initial storage, remember to continually recharge your humidfification device to effectively maintain freshness of your cigars. This means repeating step 4 each time the humidity is lower than recommended.
